Density rules for product usage dashboards
Density is not a style preference. It is a claim about how much attention a viewer can spend before a meeting moves on.
One primary question per view
If a page needs a paragraph to explain its job, split it. Executive routes in a usage intelligence platform should answer a single recurring question in under ten seconds.
Secondary marks earn their keep
Sparklines, deltas, and segment chips are useful until they become wallpaper. In critique, we remove any secondary mark that did not change a decision in the last two reviews.
Whitespace is a signal
Generous space around a chart tells the room “this is the claim.” Crowding tells the room “decode this yourself.” For product usage reviews, the first message wins.
Mobile is not an afterthought
Many Malaysian PMs skim usage boards on phones between meetings. If the mobile layout collapses into a scroll of equal-weight cards, you have not designed density — you have postponed it.
